Today I went with the book club to buy books for the library. Of course I was in heaven... buying books with a grant from the government. There's something blissful about spending $1,000 on books. Now I can go check them all out from our library!
The trends of "teen literature" concern me though. As soon as we entered Borders, most of the girls in the book club feel upon the "Teen Reads" section with voracious appetites, and they immediately started to devour the back of these books, throwing them into our baskets left and right. Yikes! All the books were "romance," full of vampires, steamy emotions, and weak plots. Maybe I'm too harsh, but I feel no remorse in labeling most of it as trash. Pornography is a concern that we're told so much about today as youth, but I wonder how many people consider some of these "romance novels" as pornography in the form of black text? Some are okay, but some of these even LDS romance novels cross the line in my opinion. I have a hard time not being thoroughly disgusted.
I, of course. found my way quickly to the "Independent Reader" section, which is a little bit safer, but all the time. Still, I love the contemporary novels that are being written--some of them are really beautiful stories that are well written. I'm pretty excited to read some of them that I chose.
So, I'm off to read and spend a few more days in the hectic paradise of West Side. The school musical is underway, as well as preparations for the Fine Arts Competition, and another difficult math class. Tah-tah for now!
